Out of Books is collaborative project inspired by Boswell and Johnson’s 1773 journey across the Scottish Highlands and Islands, as described in Johnson’s Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland, and Boswell’s Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson. Taking these 18th century texts as their guides, Ken Cockburn & Alec Finlay will revisit particular landscapes and recover particular views. Among their recurring themes are Gaelic culture, Scotland’s lack of trees, and how one makes a life at a distance from the centres of commerce and power. At this relaxed reading and discussion, Ken and Alec will reflect on their journey, read some poems, and explore the idea of reading as an active experience; how books enrich our understanding of place, and enable and deepen our friendships across communities and races.
